About the Revised Geneva Score
What is it?
The Revised Geneva Score is a clinical prediction rule used to estimate the probability of pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of PE. It helps guide diagnostic testing and management decisions.
Risk Stratification
- Low Probability: 0-3 points (≈10% prevalence of PE)
- Intermediate Probability: 4-10 points (≈30% prevalence of PE)
- High Probability: ≥11 points (≈65% prevalence of PE)
Clinical Recommendations
- Low probability: Consider D-dimer testing; if negative, PE can be ruled out.
- Intermediate probability: D-dimer testing or CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is recommended.
- High probability: Immediate imaging (CTPA or ventilation-perfusion scan) is indicated.
Limitations
This score is a clinical prediction tool and should not replace clinical judgment. Always consider the patient's overall clinical presentation and other risk factors not included in this score.
